Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week is the last round of ISTEP testing. Today, we will be taking a practice test for both math and language arts. Tomorrow will be a math test, Wednesday is language arts, and on Thursday the students will take the science portion. Please help us keep the 6th graders motivated by reminding them to get plenty of sleep and eat a warm breakfast. We know they will do great! Because of testing this week, students will be leaving their computers at school the entire week.
Also, there are about 5 weeks until all Riverside Reads reviews are due for 4th quarter. Please remind your student to keep up with their reading.
Additionally, there are many important documents coming home with your student in Red Folders this week. Please be sure to check in with them about these, and return any necessary portions with the folders. This includes an address update form, a permission slip for our field trip in May (also attached here), and a picture packet.
Lastly, we will continue raising money for Relay for Life with Spirit Days. This Friday, students may dress as their favorite super hero for $1. Last week we raised $170!
Despite ISTEP testing, it'll still be a busy week! Here's a look at what's going on this week at school...
6th Grade Math: Students will continue working on their problem-based Angles project this week. The project should be finished by Thursday, so students can present their work on Friday. There are no quiz or test this week; wahoo!
HW: 60 minutes of IXL
Advanced Math: Students will continue working on their problem-based Angles project this week. The project should be finished by Thursday, so students can present their work on Friday. There are no quiz or test this week; wahoo!
HW: 60 minutes of IXL
Language Arts: Students will have time in class to work on Achieve 3000 this week since computers will not be going home. Three different articles about matter and changing states of matter have been assigned this week. Students may choose two of them to complete. Additionally, we will revisit argumentative writing by reading various articles and forming written arguments and counterarguments for each. It is likely this will spark some healthy debates and interesting discussions in class.
HW: Complete two of the three assigned Achieve 3000 articles, read 30 minutes each night for Riverside Reads
PBL Work Time: This week students will starting to work on their resumes for the "What's the Matter?" project. Last week, Mr. Boyer gave them an introduction to resume writing and first impressions. I've attached the project rubric if you'd like to take a look at the expectations and requirements for this project. We will offer many workshops on resume writing this week and early next week. Today, any student who did not pass their Properties of Matter Common Assessment with 80% or higher will complete a review lesson and retake the assessment.
As the week goes on we will be having guest speakers start to come in and chat with our students about the effect of potholes, tires, and solutions to potholes in the road. This will help them deepen their understanding about how changing states of matter have real-world effects. Additionally, there will continue to be hands-on labs to help the students make connections between their content knowledge and the potholes in the road.
As you know, resumes are a work in progress and will need constant feedback. Please ask your student to see their resume, and be an extra set of eyes on their work.
Other Important Dates and Information:
*4th Quarter Writing Prompt - May 8
*JA in a Day - May 9
*Fall Sports Call-Out Meeting - May 9
*6th Grade PBL Field Trip to Potato Creek - May 19 *Talent Show - May 20 at 6:30pm
