Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to a busy week at school! There are a lot of fun events taking place this week. Ecology Club will be conducting their Food Drive this week. Each homeroom will compete to see who can bring in the most non-perishable items by Friday. The school goal is 1000 items!
Also, starting this week, each Friday from now until the end of the year will be Spirit Fridays. This will be used as a fundraiser for the 6th grade Relay for Life project. Each Friday there will be a different theme, and students may pay $1 to dress up.
This Friday will be Pajama Day! Specific details will be coming home in Monday folders about this, and I've also attached the flyer in this email.
This week is also Explorations Week during SOAR time. Be sure to check in with your student about the fun activities they are taking part in this week.
Additionally, we are staring our new PBL project called "What's the Matter?" If you have any empty two-liter bottles, please have your student bring it to school for a science lab we'll be doing on Wednesday. We need a total of 25!!
As for academics, here's a look at what's going on this week:
6th Grade Math: Students will begin Geometry. They will begin with a vocabulary list. There will be a quiz over the vocabulary words on Friday.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL
Advanced Math: Students will begin Geometry. They will begin with a vocabulary list. There will be a quiz over the vocabulary words on Friday.

Language Arts: Today, students will be wrapping up Tuck Everlasting by comparing and contrasting the novel to the movie they watched on Friday. They will write a well-written response on Echo to this effect. The rest of the week will be spent on reading various pieces of literature and answering multiple choice questions for ISTEP preparation. Also, students will learn about theme in literature and the world around us. They will be using their knowledge of theme to identify the author's message in children's books, Tuck Everlasting, and other pieces of literature.
HW: Complete Achieve 3000 articles and read 30 minutes each night
PBL Work Time: We are excited to start our new project called "What's the Matter?" today! The students will be learning about states of matter, physical and chemical changes, and the students will be conducting many hands-on labs and observations. I've attached the Entry Event letter and you can view the Entry Event video on YouTube. This week we will conduct our Entry Event, complete our Knows and Need to Knows, and the students will start an inquiry-based learning of the content knowledge. While this project will require students to work in groups, it will mainly be an individually based final product. More specific details and a grading rubric will come next week!
