Hello Parents and Guardians,
As this week gets underway, we are very excited about the 6th graders' first presentation on Tuesday. Please remember, you are all invited to attend the "Who Am I?" Gallery Walk on Tuesday, September 9 anytime between 1:15pm and 2:15pm. If you'd like to know the time block your student is presenting, please look at the presentation schedule HERE. You may stay as long or for as little as you wish. Just remember to check in at the front office!
Here's a look at what the students will be learning in classes this week...
6th Grade Math: Students will be reviewing Topic 1 from Digits and taking a test on Wednesday. They will also take a pre-assessment for Moby Max (an online math curriculum and practice site) later this week. Students will begin Topic 2 in Digits, covering expressions.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL for the week
Advanced Math: Students will be reviewing Topic 1 from Digits and taking a test on Wednesday. They will also take a pre-assessment for Moby Max (an online math curriculum and practice site) later this week. Students will begin Topic 2 in Digits, covering rates and ratios.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL for the week
Language Arts: This week we will continue learning about the elements of plot and how they can be identified in stories, movies, and literature. On Monday, students will work with their groups to identify and map out the plot elements of a children's book. Tuesday, students will transition back to reading Brian's Winter (chapter 7) and map the plot elements of the novel so far. We will also work on writing summaries as an extension to our paragraph writing. The rest of the week we will be reading chapters 8-11 and discussing how the plot is developing in the story.
HW: Complete two Achieve 3000 articles (one assigned: "The Voice of a Princess") at 75% or higher with well-written thought questions, Read 30 minutes each night
PBL Work Time: On Monday, students will be paired with two 5th grade PBL students. The 5th grade team will be providing peer feedback for the 6th graders' presentations. This will also be great practice for our students before their Gallery Walk on Tuesday. Students are encouraged to dress professionally/nicely on Tuesday as we will have many guests in the building! On Wednesday, we will have both team and individual reflection time about how the first project of the year went. Thursday, the students will be placed into groups of four (leading up to our next project beginning on Friday), and they will complete a team-building activity to get to know each other. This will ease them into working as a team before we being our next project on ecosystems. On Friday, the students will take part in our entry event for the next project, focused mainly on ecosystems, locally and worldwide. The driving question for this project will be "What impacts the world around us?" More details and information to come on this project next week!
HW: Students should not have any homework for PBL time this week, other than to practice their presentation on Monday night!
Other Important Dates and Information:
*Students will be getting a permission slip in their Red Folders that needs to be returned by Friday, September 12. Please look for this!
Thank you for your support at home. We hope to see you on Tuesday afternoon! Have a great week, and as always, feel free to email or call with any questions or concerns.
