Dear Parents and Guardians,
The first week of the second quarter is a short one due to Fall Break. This week we will be seeing most of you at Parent/Teacher Conferences. If you have not already scheduled a time for a conference, please be sure to check in with your student's homeroom teacher. You and your student will receive the first quarter report card at conferences.
Starting Monday, students should be reading 30 minutes EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. This is meant to help students fulfill their Riverside Reads requirements. Many parents have mentioned their student is not reading at home, and they really should be. I have attached a copy of the Tic-Tac-Toe students should be completing each 9 weeks, as well as an interesting infographic detailing the importance of reading each night. The data is quite astounding!
Even though it's a short week, students will still have assignments and a small amount of homework. Here's a look at what's going on at school this week.
6th Grade Math: Students will begin lessons on multiplying fractions. They will complete Digits assignments on this topic. (Multiplying fractions will be useful during PBL time this week!) There will NOT be a quiz this week. Also, students do NOT need to complete 60 minutes of IXL this week, as there will not be much time in class to begin this.
HW: No Homework!
Language Arts: Students will be reading, annotating, and discussing a nonfiction article that will hopefully spark some serious discussion and bring out the students' opinions. I've attached the article if you'd like to read along with your student! Students will be reviewing the structure of argument writing, and they will write strong argument paragraphs on this article. Tuesday, students will participate in a Socratic Circle discussion about the article. (These have been so impressive, by the way!) On Wednesday, students will take a quiz over argument writing. They will be given an article, will be expected to read the article, and then write a strong argument paragraph as practiced in class.
HW: Students STILL need to complete 2 Achieve 3000 articles at 75% or higher (despite the short week!), Read 30 minutes each night
PBL Work Time: We are so very proud of your students for completing their first major project of the year. We will not start our next project until after Fall Break. (Details on this to come next week!)
This week, students will be using their lessons from math about multiplying fractions to complete a No-Bake Cooking Lab. In order for the recipe to come out right, they'll have to do the math correctly. In the past, many 6th graders cookies do not turn out as expected. Hopefully their math skills prove worthy.
Students will also have an afternoon with Miss Cobb, the school social worker. She will be working with them on important social and life skills.
Lastly, on Wednesday, we have Melanie Jeffers coming to our classroom. She is in charge of our CONNECT Anti-Bullying Program and will be doing some activities with our team to help the 6th graders learn about bullying.
HW: No Homework!
We hope to see you all at Parent/Teacher Conferences this week.
Enjoy the short week and Fall Break!
Have a great week,
6th Grade PBL Facilitators
