Parents and Guardians,
A special "thanks" to all of the parents who attended our PBL Informational Night last week; it was very constructive and useful to both parties!
This is the very last week of the first quarter. We can hardly believe how time is flying. As we wind down the week, there are a lot of due dates and assignments coming up. Please check the homework and benchmark dates carefully. Per usual, it'll be a busy week in 6th grade!
6th Grade Math: Students will be continuing with fractions this week. (Least common multiple, greatest common factor, equivalent fractions, and simplifying fractions) Later in the week, they will move on to adding and subtracting fractions. Any student who did not pass their Decimals Common Assessment with an 80% or higher will have a chance to retake that test early in the week.
DUE WEDNESDAY: Digits lessons 2-4, 2-6, i91, i92, and i9-3As always, there will be a quiz on Friday over the week's concepts.
Math HW: 60 minutes of IXL, finish Digits lessons if not completed in class
Language Arts: We will continue reading nonfiction texts and we will practice using evidence from the text to answer short answer questions. Students will also continue with their grammar skills centered around common and proper nouns. Additionally, we will continue working on argumentative writing.
Something exciting students participated in for the first time last week was a Socratic Circle Discussion. This is something I never did until I was in college; the students were impressive with their thoughts and ability to hold a student-led discussion. If you're not sure what a Socratic Circle is, you can watch an example on YouTube by clicking HERE. The students seemed to really enjoy this and asked if we would do it again. Indeed we will, as the 6th graders will take part in a second discussion this week. Ask your student about this! (Picture attached!)
ALL RIVERSIDE READS TIC-TAC-TOES AND BOOK REVIEWS ARE DUE BY FRIDAY, AT THE END OF THE DAY.
Students will need to turn in their blue Tic-Tac-Toe papers with 4 completed books in order to receive full credit. No exceptions will be made, as we need to enter final grades.
LA HW: Complete any remaining Riverside Reads books and/or reviews, Complete two Achieve 3000 articles at 75% or higher
(Shout-out to all Miss Kappler's homeroom students: 100% completion on Achieve last week! Woot!)
PBL Project Time: This is the final week of the 6th graders' Ancient Civilizations Project. On Monday, students will have time to practice their presentation with their group and then they will present to one other group in order to take part in "Critical Friends." The groups will provide "I likes..." and "I wonders..." for each other in order to receive feedback and suggestions before presenting on Tuesday and Wednesday. Links to websites, commercials, brochures, bibliographies, and/or any other student-created work will need to be submitted by the end of the day on Monday. (Some are looking IMPRESSIVE!) If your student hasn't shown you their final work, please be sure to ask about it! (The grading rubric is attached for your viewing pleasure.)
FINAL PRESENTATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. Students will present to half of their classmates (50 students in one room, 50 in another) and teachers. The top 10 presentations (as voted on by teachers and their peers) will then present again on Thursday to an authentic panel of travel agents, retired history teachers, and people planning to travel in the near future.
On Friday, students will complete a Peer Feedback Rubric and we will debrief on our first "full-blown" PBL project. There will be some time spent celebrating their first nine weeks as a 6th grader, and we will take part in some ever-important team building activities!
Other Important Dates and Information:*Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Monday, October 21 and Tuesday, October 22. If you have not scheduled a time with your child's homeroom teacher, please do so ASAP! We'd love to see all of you there! *Fall Break is October 24-25! (Yahoo!)
As always, feel free to call or email with any questions or concerns.
Have a great week,
6th Grade PBL Facilitators
