Parents and Guardians,
The students are very excited for this week as Riverside begins their Explorations! They've been asking about this week for the past month. During SOAR time, students will be heading out to activities of their choice. Be sure to have your student share which activity they chose!
Here's a look at what's going on in PBL this week:
6th Grade Math: Students will continue working on ratios and the associated Digits lessons. There will be a quiz on Friday!
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL (Lessons: AA1-AA.9)
7th Grade Math: Students will be taking the ratios Common Assessment. They will also begin Digits lessons on percentages.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL (same lessons as last week)
Language Arts: Students will continue reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret. (They really can't get enough of this book!) We will actually be finishing the book this week! As students read, they will be able to choose two different reading response options. These can be found on our Echo agendas for the week. And since the book ends with a mind-blowing revelation, we will obviously have an in-depth discussion!
We will also begin working on how to conduct professional interviews and the students will begin writing interview questions for the next phase in our PBL project. We will even have some of the highs school students visiting to guide the students in well-written interview questions this week.
As we continue to read and work on Language Arts skills, students will use their ability to make inferences to make cause/effect connections. We will begin mini-lessons on cause and effect on Wednesday and carry on with this skill for the rest of the week.
HW: Read 30 minutes each night for Riverside Reads, Complete two Achieve 3000 articles at 75% or higher with well-written thought questions
PBL Work Time: Students will be moving into the next phase of our project this week. We have many speakers and school staff members lined up who want/need help with everyday tasks. The students will be writing and interviewing these people so they can begin to brainstorm simple machine inventions to help with these needs.
Students will also continue learning about potential and kinetic energy using the resources in Discovery Education. There will be an assessment of their knowledge of these concepts. We are planning on conducting workshops based on the students assessment results. There will also be additional workshops offered on interviewing.
Other Important Dates and Information: *Students will have important information in their Red Monday folders this week. One document will be a letter that needs to be returned to school this week. Please read through this carefully. I've attached a copy here as well. *CONNECT program for staff and parents will be held on Monday and Tuesday, 3:30-5:30pm. We'd love to see you there! *This week begins Explorations for SOAR time.*A Penny War is beginning this week. Students should bring in extra change to help their homeroom win! *In order to help children around the world enjoy a happy holiday season, our team has been tasked with bringing in markers and crayons. If you and your student would like to donate, please have them bring items to their homerooms to donate.
Don't forget to check out specific project updates, pictures, and details on our PBL Website: http://pblinnovationacademy.weebly.com/
