Dear Parents and Guardians,
It was another fun week in PBL! Students really, like really, seem to be enjoying reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret. So many of them have asked to read ahead. They can't get enough! Also, on Friday, the students did a test run of their bottle racer cars. Attached are some pictures of that excitement. Looking at their expressions, you can tell many students were not very impressed with how the first race went. Luckily, they will have this week to make any necessary adjustments!
Here's a look at what's going this week in 6th grade:
6th Grade Math: Students will be finishing up fractions with a test over adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. We will then begin Digits: Topic 10 on Ratios.
HW: 60 minutes of IXL
7th Grade Math: Students will be finishing up Ratios and Unit Rates, and then will move on to Digits: Topic 3 on Percentages.
HW: 60 minutes of IXL
Language Arts: We have officially made it through half of our novel, so this week we will be spending some time doing writing activities based on Part 1. Students will be working on an audio or video recording of a significant connection they made while reading Part 1 of the book. They will have time on Monday and Tuesday (with the recording being due on Tuesday) to work on this.
We will also hold a Socratic Circle discussion to figure out some of the more metaphorical and symbolic elements of the book. The students are going to have to think deep for this!
Also, to move forward with our PBL project, students will have to learn how to write quality interview questions. Part of Language Arts time will be spent on that skill.
Lastly, students will continue reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret. It really is exciting to see how engaged in this book they are!
HW: Read 60 minutes each night for Riverside Reads, Complete two Achieve 3000 articles at 75% or higher with well-written thought questions
PBL Work Time: This week students will continue making adjustments to their bottle racer cars. On Monday, the students will take part in a Science Talk (basically the same thing as a Socratic Circle) to discuss how each group created a car that either worked or didn't. Additionally, they will be attending a mandatory workshop on potential and kinetic energy which will likely help their progress.
Students will also continue learning about simple machines, energy, and work through lessons on DiscoveryEd which is used for our science curriculum.
We are hoping to have a few guest speakers in this week: A car expert and some high school students in journalism classes. Hopefully the speakers can provide students with further knowledge to help them move along in this project.
Lastly, students will have an opportunity to race their bottle cars one last time on Friday. Hopefully the groups will combine their knowledge of energy to help make adjustments to their cars!
