Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy ISTEP Week (round 1)! As this is a somewhat stressful week for your student, please help them stay relaxed and prepared at home by getting to bed at a decent time, eating something substantial at breakfast, and reminding them they are prepared and ready! We know the students will do their best, and that's all anyone can expect. Testing will begin on Tuesday, and it will continue until Friday. Please try to minimize absences as much as possible this week!
Since we do have testing everyday, students WILL NOT be able to bring their computers home this week. However, students are still assigned Achieve 3000 and IXL; they will need to use their class time wisely in order to complete their work. There will be extra time provided for these tasks, but the expectations still remain the same.
Also note: Students MAY NOT have any electronic device with them in the testing room. We will remind students to leave their phones, iPods, etc., in their locker, but if your student does not have a lock, you may want to encourage them to leave their device at home. We are not responsible for student devices, so it may be in their best interest to not bring it at all this week!
Because of testing this week, our schedule will be rather flexible. Some due dates may change based on time allotted for classes. Even still, here's a look at what's going on in each class.
6th Grade Math: Students will be finishing Topic 11 in Digits this week. The rest of the week, students will be completing a real-world problem activity called "Meal of My Life." This will use math skills they've learned this year, but help them see real-world application. Work for this activity will be due on Friday.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL
Advanced Math: Student will be working on Topic 12 (ratio reasoning) in Digits. Nothing specific is due this week, but students should use their time wisely in class to complete the lessons. There will also be time to work on IXL.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL
Language Arts: This week, students will be reviewing figurative language (similes and metaphors) by identifying song lyrics which contain these elements. Students will then complete an analysis of the song lyrics, explaining the deeper meaning of the similes and metaphors in relation to the song. This activity will be due on Friday at the end of the week.
Also, starting today we will begin our annual Achieve 3000 March Madness competition. Students have been put into brackets based on our homerooms, and they will compete against each other to be the Achieve 3000 champion. Please ask your student about this; it's usually a favorite of the 6th graders.
HW: Complete Achieve 3000 - both articles are the students' choice this week!
PBL Work Time: We will be wrapping up our project on matter this week. Students will take part in a hands-on lab that shows how matter can change states during the making of ice cream. On Thursday, Mrs. Melanie Jeffirs will be here to work with our 6th graders on the CONNECT anti-bullying program. There will be ample time during the afternoons to work on Achieve 3000 and IXL. Again, this week will be very flexible.
HW: No homework this week
Other Important Dates and Information:
*ISTEP Testing this week!
*March 13 - End of 3rd Quarter
*March 18 - Junior Achievement in a Day
*March 23-27 - Spring Break
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email or call with any questions or concerns.
Have a great week,
6th Grade PBL Facilitators
