Dear Parents and Guardians,
Here's to hoping we have a full, uninterrupted week of school! Now that we are back on a somewhat normal schedule, please look for report cards and information about last year's ISTEP data to be coming home today in Red Folders. Be sure to look for these documents and talk with your student about them!
Also note, THERE IS SCHOOL on Friday, February 7 in order to make up for the numerous snow days we have accumulated this year. It was originally scheduled as a day off for Winter Break, but school will be in session!
Here's a look at what's going on at school this week:
6th Grade Math: Students will be working on proportions, percent of a number, and start Topic 1 in Digits on equations. There will be a quiz on Friday.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL
Advanced Math: Students will begin working with single-step equations. There will be a quiz on Friday over this content.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL
Language Arts: This week in Language Arts, we will begin reading various nonfiction articles about our earth, ecosystems, and specific plants and animals that are being affected by changing environments. This will go along well with our Ecosystems project in PBL. (These articles can be found in Achieve 3000, and students are welcome to use these articles for their Achieve requirements this week!) We will specifically working on citing evidence from the text in written responses and answering short-answer questions. Grammar-wise we'll be focusing on compound sentences. Depending on time, students may have a homework assignment which will require them to watch a podcast video and take a few short notes (about compound sentences) in preparation for class this week.
HW: Complete two Achieve 3000 articles at 75% or better, read 30 minutes each night
PBL Work Time: Today in PBL, students will be reviewing their geography skills and then taking a Common Assessment over geography and map skills. When students finish their Common Assessment, they will be reading and annotating an article about our changing world and ecosystems. This is in preparation for our Ecosystems Project entry event. This project's driving question is: What impacts the world? I've attached the article if you'd like to read along! We were planning on starting this project on Tuesday, but due to the ISTEP Readiness Test and Science Acuity, this will likely be pushed back to Wednesday. Student groups will complete Knows/Need To Knows and create their group contracts this week as well. Much of the work for this project will be content heavy (science) in the beginning, and eventually will transfer into student blogging. More specific details about this will come as the students begin specific work.
HW: Finish reading Ecosystems article if needed
