Dear Parents and Guardians,
We're off to a short and busy week this week! This week will be rather hectic not only due to the weather, but also because all Riverside students will be taking the ACT Aspire Assessments this week. This is the assessment that measures their learning thus far this year. 6th graders will take one assessment per day, unless we miss another day of school (English, Math, Reading, Science). Because of the testing, students' daily schedules will have to be flexible and may change; please note some of the classwork listed below may also change in relation to this.
One exciting event to look forward to this week is our first After-School Movie Night to benefit our team's service project for Relay for Life. The movie shown will be "Despicable Me 2." Students can pay $5 to gain entrance to the movie, as well as get three tickets for pizza, water, or candy. They can also bring additional money for more snacks and drinks if they choose. All proceeds will be donated to Relay for Life. The movie will start right after school at 2:45pm. Students attending will need to be picked up at 4pm.
Like I said, class schedules and work may need to be adjusted and flexible, but for now, here is a look at what's going on in each class.
6th Grade Math: This week students will continue working on Topic 10 (ratios) in Digits. Due dates for this topic will be flexible, and they will be adjusted on a day-to-day basis. Students will need to check the Echo agenda each day for this information.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL for the week
Advanced Math: This week students will continue working on Topic 9 (equations) in Digits. Due dates for this topic will be flexible, and they will be adjusted on a day-to-day basis. Students will need to check the Echo agenda each day for this information.
HW: Complete 60 minutes of IXL for the week
Language Arts: Students will continue working on identifying and explaining main idea from various texts. The reading will stem from the remainder of our book Freedom Walkers, which we will hopefully finish this week or early next week.
Because of the testing schedule, students will likely have chunks of times to work on Achieve 3000 at school. This week's assigned article is called "Changing Seasons." Students will need to take their time and refer back to the article and supplemental reading in order to answer the questions correctly.
HW: Read 30 minutes each night, Complete two Achieve 3000 articles at 75% or higher
PBL Work Time: This week students will be wrapping up their project on climate regions and how they are affected by wind and ocean currents. By the beginning of PBL time tomorrow, students will need to turn in a final draft of their group's script. Once students have completed their scripts, their group of 4 will join another group of 4 students to begin planning and building their climate region set. More than likely, students will need to bring some supplies, craft materials, or props from home. While we have some large cardboard boxes, students will need to be creative with their set materials. Groups will spend Wednesday and Thursday, and part of Friday building their sets. I have attached the Project Rubric if you would like to see how the students will be graded.
Final presentations will be held on Tuesday, February 10. We will provide specific times for presentations later this week, but mark it on your calendar because are all invited to attend!
HW: Work on climate region set/elements if needed!
Other Important Dates and Information:
*ACT Aspire Testing this week - English, Math, Reading, Science
*Relay for Life Movie Night - Friday, February 6th, 2:45pm-4pm ($5.00)
*School will be in session - Monday, February 16 (Snow make-up day)
As always, feel free to email or call with any questions or concerns. Have a great week!
