Happy Monday Parents and Guardians,
As the next two weeks wind down, your students will be busy and working hard to complete their Simple Machines Inventions Project. The goal is to complete this project before Winter Break, even though the quarter does not end until January. Please be sure to check below for important dates and information regarding the PBL project.
Here's a look at what's going on this week:
6th Grade Math: Students will be presenting their Digits DJ for a Day project in class this week. The students will also be reviewing ratios this week, and they will be taking a test over this content. Towards the end of the week, students will begin working on Digits topic 11 on rates.
HW: Study for test, 60 minutes of IXL
7th Grade Math: Students will be reviewing percentages and preparing for a test this week. This includes percent equation, simple interest, percent increase, percent decrease, price markup and price markdown. The students will then begin working on integers in Digits.
HW: Study for test, 60 minutes of IXL
Language Arts: This week students will be working on Word Choice in their writing. The goal is swap out boring, dull, "rice cake words" for more precise, vivid, "salsa words." We will also be taking this week to finish the students Invention Proposal Argument Essays. A final, fully typed essay must be completed by Tuesday when they come to Language Arts.
On Tuesday, students will be completing peer editing and any final changes to their essay. Final drafts must be submitted to Google Docs by the end of the day Wednesday.
Students will also be reading two assigned articles for Achieve this week. Both articles are about bullying and will be required for the students' writing prompt on Friday. On Thursday, the students will take part in a short discussion about the articles and do a review of how to organize argument writing. 2nd quarter writing prompt will be done on Friday.
HW: Read 30 minutes each night for Riverside Reads (all 4 book reviews are due very soon!), Complete 2 assigned bullying articles for Achieve 3000
PBL Work Time: Today, students will be working with their group to write a letter to the staff member in which they are creating their invention for. This letter will be to explain why the invention will be useful to them, and it will explain how the invention will work.
The rest of the week, students will begin creating their invention. Students will need to bring materials from home to complete their invention. While we have simple, small materials, some students may need to bring in items to finish their work. Inventions must be in working form by Friday.
HW: Gather materials for invention
Other Important Dates and Information: *On Friday, December 20, we need a few parent volunteers to pop popcorn for our students, as we will watch a holiday movie on that Friday. Volunteers will be needed at 11:30, for about an hour and a half. *Students will present their final inventions on the afternoon of Thursday, December 19 in a science fair format. All are encouraged to attend. (More info on this next week). *Any donations for the Humane Society are due on Wednesday, December 18.
As always, thanks for all you do at home! Feel free to email or call with any questions or concerns.
Have a phenomenal week,
6th Grade PBL Facilitators
