Dear 6th PBL Parents and Guardians,
We hope you all had a lovely (extended!) Thanksgiving Break. We are coming close the midterm of second quarter; please take a moment to check in with your student and have them show you their grades in Echo.
This week at school will be busy for your student. Please see below for what is going on.
6th Grade Math: Students will be taking their Common Assessment on Ratios on Monday. They will review today in class. The rest of the week the students will work on a Digits Real-World Problem called "DJ for a Day." The survey results, and final ratios, and song explanations will be due on Friday.
HW: Complete "DJ for a Day", 60 minutes of IXL
7th Grade Math: Students will finish their Percentages Digits lessons. There will be a test on Friday over the content.
HW: Complete Digits lessons on Percentages if needed, 60 minutes of IXL
Language Arts: This week the students will be focusing on argumentative essays. Students will be learning how to organize and structure argument essays, and they will begin outlining an argument essay for their invention proposal (to be used with their PBL project). Students will be arguing why someone should choose their invention for everyday use and why it would be beneficial. Brainstorming (graphic organizer) will be due on Wednesday at the end of class. Outlines for the argument essay will be due on Thursday at the end of the class period. In addition to this, students will also begin focusing on Word Choice in their writing.
Students will be taking the Language Arts Acuity test on Tuesday. There will be a Cause and Effect Common Assessment on Friday. We'll do a short review on Thursday for this.
HW: Read 30 minutes each night for Riverside Reads, Complete two Achieve 3000 articles with well-written thought-questions
PBL Work Time: Because of the snow day on Wednesday, our schedule will be a little hectic this week. Today, the students will begin working on map skills through a workshop. The students will begin identifying places in the world where their inventions would or would not work. This information will also help as they begin their argument essays.
On Tuesday, we will be watching the movie "Hugo," and comparing the movie to the novel we just read. Wednesday, the Humane Society has been scheduled to visit our team and talk about their job and needs around the holiday season. A flyer about this will be in the red Monday folders. Thursday, students will be taking the Science Acuity test. On Friday, the 6th graders have D.A.R.E. graduation at 1:45pm. Have your student wear their new D.A.R.E. shirts! If you are free, please come to see the students take part in this celebration!
With the open time we do have, students will narrow down in their groups which invention they will actually create, and begin drawing up official blueprints for the invention. We are not setting specific due dates at this time, due the busy week. We'll update you as the week progresses.
Other Important Dates and Information:*Informational meeting and question/answer session for PBL at WSOI (high school) at 6pm tonight. *D.A.R.E. Graduation at 1:45pm on December 6. Students should wear their new D.A.R.E. shirts. *The Holiday Concert will be held at 6:30pm on December 17.
